The Power of Vishnu Sahasranama

Vishnu Sahasranama is the medicine for all diseases. Vaidya Sastra freely invokes Sahasranama japa for curing dire diseases, generally known to be incurable, `Mantra Sastra' suggests Sahasranama japa for achieving the odds and ends of worldly life, `Karma Vibhagam' prescribes the Sahasranama japa for all the ailments plaguing mankind and of-course Sri Visnusahasranama is a medicine for the disease of birth, death and re-birth, which is far more dreadful than the worst of bodily ailments.
 
That man who with devotion and perseverance and heart wholly turned towards him, recites these thousand names of Vasudeva every day, after having purified himself, succeeds in acquiring great fame, a position of eminence among his kinsmen, enduring prosperity, and lastly, that which is of the highest benefit to him (viz., emancipation Moksha itself). Such a man never meets with fear at any time, and acquires great prowess and energy. Disease never afflicts him; splendour of complexion, strength, beauty, and accomplishments become his. The sick become hale, the afflicted become freed from their afflictions; the frightened become freed from fear, and he that is plunged in calamity becomes freed from calamity."

The man who hymns the praises of that foremost of Beings by reciting His thousand names with devotion succeeds in quickly crossing all difficulties. That mortal who takes refuge in Vasudeva and who becomes devoted to Him, becomes freed of all sins and attains to eternal Brahman. They who are devoted to Vasudeva have never to encounter any evil. They become freed from the fear of birth, death, decrepitude, and disease.

Trees Too Live!

If trees too are Jivas, what kind of life do they have? Do they have sensation, comprehension?
They do have, tells Bhagavata. Though they don’t have as much comprehension as the humans have, still they do have subtle sensations. They too experience joy and pains. But their experiences are internal – Antahsparsha. They suffer and or enjoy happiness only deep within. They are helpless to express their joys or pains; are unable to share it with others.
When watered, plants are pleased. Sucking the water they grow up fine. They respond to love. When someone comes to chop them, they tremble deep within, scared and pained. Science proves this with measuring machines.
Yet unlike humans, they can’t go deep in awareness. Their sensation and experience are limited. Therefore they are unclear and more ignorant.
When man dies his body decomposes. But when the trees die they don’t rot. They dry up and become fuel. Even after their death, they become useful to man. This too is speciality of this creation. Because of this speciality it becomes a major creation. Therefore Bhagavata calls trees ‘visosi’ – drying ones.
How many varieties are there in trees? Ancient scholars recognize six types in these immovables:
1. Vanaspatis वनस्पति– large trees that grow fruits without flowering
2. Drumas – large trees that bloom and give fruits
3. Osadhis – trees that die soon after they give fruits
4. Latas – creepers and tiny plants
5. Viruts – plants that grow as bushes
6. Tvaksaaras – plants hollow inside with strong barks like bamboos.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita- AdhyAya 4: Jnana Yoga :Shlokas 21,22

 

निराशीर्यतचित्तात्मा त्यक्तसर्वपरिग्रहः ।

शारीरं कॆवलं कर्म कुर्वन्नाप्नॊति किल्बिषम् ॥४.२१॥

 

nirAshIryatachittAtmA tyaktasarvaparigrahaH |

shArIraM kEvalaM karma kurvannApnOti kilbiSham ||4.21||

 

He, who has no desires, has controlled his mind and will and is divested of attachment, does not incur any sin by doing what is barely necessary for maintaining the body.

God, Everywhere..

Udupi Sri Krishna

Not only within us, wherever we desire, we can see the presence of God, says Krishna:

tejaḥ śrīḥ kīrtir aiśvaryaḿ

hrīs tyāg aḥ saubhagaḿ bhagaḥ

vīryaḿ titikṣā vijñāna� ��

yatra yatra sa me 'ḿśakaḥ

Tejas means well composed personality, deep personality like an ocean. Though such persons are very quiet, one hesitates to confront them. It is such a personality that commands much respect.

Sri means glow, beauty. A charming stance that makes you feel seeing the person again and again. Such is the attraction of the charm and personality!

Hri means hesitation. Hesitation to do bad deeds, to boast about oneself. Feeling embarrassed even when others praise or condemn you. It is one of the faces of goodness.

Tyaaga means sharing with others, whatever one has. Reserving our life for the welfare of others. When there is need, being ready for sacrifice is a noble quality.

Saubhaga means good fortune. Fortunate state, wherein whatever is touched turns into gold, works done turn in piety. It is a lucky life of laughter and joy.

Bhaga means, a special capacity of the personality of winning everyone and standing above everyone.

Virya means power, strength. Might of making others bow down.

Titiksa means tolerance. A balanced view of tolerating the conflict of pain and pleasure. Patience in facing difficulties. Self confidence in facing social slander and abuses without losing confidence.

The last, eleventh is vijñāna. It is the peak of knowledge. A profound scholarship that can understand things in all details and open out the deep secrets of the world.

These are the qualities that elevate a man. A person having even one quality among these is respected by the society as a great person.

One is bright, another is detestable. One is rich, another is poor. One is vijñāni, another is dumb! Why is it so? Why this disparity?

These qualities are nobody’s personal property. These belong to God. In which person God’s presence is more, in him these qualities get more enhanced expression.

God is present there. Because of his eminence, such a power emerged in that specific person. That is why people respect that. Bhagavan is the one who has given that power. People are just the media for the expression of God’s power.
